About 30 minutes South is the legendary "Tail of the Dragon". An 11 mile portion of US 129 with 318 curves and no intersections or driveways. When combined with the nearby Cherohala Skyway, Blueridge Parkway, and the Moonshiner 28, this is the Nation's #1 motorcycle and sports car destination. Test your skills, or just enjoy the scenery.. its very, very cool either way.
The Queen of Southern Cuisine is open for business in Pigeon Forge. The new facility on the Island is magnificent and the home of Paul Deen's newest restaurant, retail store, and her private network studio. Everything is open so make plans to have a meal, do some shopping, and perhaps even visit with Paula Deen live in the store. Waits are still long, but call ahead (865-366-1510) and get on the waiting list up to 1 hour ahead of your arrival.
Ole Smoky Distillery is located on the Island and provides an "insider's" look at making moonshine and other flavored distilled products. They offer free tastings of up to 12 flavors just by walking up to the bar. No tour, no gimmicks, just free samples in hopes you'll buy their products. The best part is the family-friendly, live, bluegrass bands just outside the front door. No drinking, no profanity, just good ole mountain music with a little Gospel for good measure.
Home to Margaritaville, Paula Deen's and several kid-friendly attractions, the Island in downtown Pigeon Forge is where we spend many evenings watching the people and enjoying a fountain which rivals the Bellagio's in grandeur. There are no admission or parking fees. Have a seat in any one of 500 rocking chairs and soak in all the happiness of being in the Smokies.
There is nothing better than sneaking a little Native American History into your vacation. From the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, to one of the Nation's largest outdoor drama theaters you can witness the history of the Cherokee. "Unto These Hills" is the Nation's 2nd longest running drama, having run for more than 50 years.
Ripley's Aquarium of the Smoky Mountains is located just minutes away in Gatlinburg. This attraction is voted as the #1 Aquarium in the United States by Tripadvisor.Com. Something that will amaze and educate the entire family. Also nearby is Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum, Ripley's Haunted Adventure and Ripley's Mirror Maze.
